Martin's presence helps PK to

BLACK SOX captain Jarrad Martin's appearance in the intercity competition on Saturday spurred Poneke-Kilbirnie to emphatic wins over Miramar and Giants.

Martin, a New Plymouth resident, requires seven starts in the intercity competition to qualify for the upcoming men's national interclub championships as a PK player.

He is likely to feature again next weekend in the semifinals, when PK play Dodgers.

Judging by Saturday's one-sided results, Martin's influence will lift the already talented PK team.

PK beat Giants 8-1 in the first game at Hataitai Park, and then blasted competition leaders Miramar 13-3, with heavy hitting in the afternoon.

Dan Tarapai was among the action for PK with two automatic home runs against Miramar, while Thomas Makea and Martin slammed balls towards the car park at Hataitai Park.

Miramar brought David Golan on to replace pitcher Frank Pointon in the third innings following PK's flying start, but the damage was done.

It was a similar story in PK's 8-1 win over Giants, with Blair Thompson the only hitter to score for the losing side.

Miramar, despite the drubbing, still retain top ranking for next Saturday's intercity semifinals, and will be relieved that they play fourth-placed Porirua City United rather than third-placed PK.

In other men's games, Dodgers beat Hutt Valley Marist 9-0 in five innings. PCU beat Johnsonville in another one-sided game, winning 9- 0.

In the women's intercity competition, Newlands came from 4-2 down to beat Saints Giverchy Fake Handbags 6-5 to claim fourth spot for the playoffs. Miramar bounced back from last weekend's loss to Johnsonville to beat Hutt City United 15-11.

Next weekend, top women's qualifier Te Aroha will play Newlands, and Miramar play Hutt City United. The women's final will also be played next Saturday at 3pm. With the women's national interclub championships starting on March 10 in Lower Hutt, there was more urgency to complete the competition.

The men's intercity finals are in a fortnight, with the men's national interclub championships in Christchurch from March 16.
